This role provides strategic oversight, operational, programmatic, and administrative leadership for Michigan Medicine Health Advancement, guiding the department's mission and vision related to health equity, professional growth, and a thriving culture. The Senior Director will lead a team, manage strategic planning, financial performance, and cultivate partnerships across the community and institution to improve patient care, learner development, and workforce engagement.
Responsibilities
- Provide strategic oversight, operational, programmatic, and administrative leadership for Michigan Medicine Health Advancement.
- Guide the strategic direction of the department internally and externally, cultivating partnerships with diverse constituent groups.
- Oversee Health Advancement's financial performance and budget, ensuring strategic allocation of resources and compliance with financial policies.
- Manage all Health Advancement personnel and administrative functions, including recruitment, supervision, coaching, and performance management.
- Convene and preside over the Health Advancement Advisory Board to spearhead collaborations and system-wide opportunities.
- Build relationships and collaborative partnerships to foster support for health equity and educational/professional pathways initiatives.
- Lead Health Advancement fundraising efforts in consultation with the Michigan Medicine Development Office.
- Develop and maintain community partnerships and resources to promote health equity.
- Measure the effectiveness of Health Advancement initiatives and operations, including institutional benchmarking and preparing periodic reports.
- Collaborate with the Communications Manager to develop strategy and content for marketing, development materials, website, and public relations.
Requirements
- Advanced degree (MS, MPH, MBA, PhD, JD) or equivalent combination of education/experience
- 5+ years of progressively responsible administrative experience in a complex environment
- Experience in management and supervision of a team of 15 or more
- Strong understanding of current best practices and trends in higher education, health advancement, and educational/professional pathways
- Demonstrated experience guiding strategic direction of a unit or organization
- Accustomed to working in a fast-paced, complex, and policy-driven environment
- Experienced in change management or launching new lines of business/service
- Familiar with data-driven decision-making, able to collect, analyze, and present findings
- Exercises sound judgment and discretion with confidential information
- Ability to produce forward-looking, transparent plans and budgets and manage resources
- Ability to clearly communicate strategies, measures of success, and policy to stakeholders
- Demonstrated interest in policy and structural change
- Effective and detailed writing, editing, and proofreading abilities
- Demonstrated growth mindset and motivation for organizational/personnel development
- Ability to lead and inspire teams during growth or change
- Demonstrated leadership experience with finance and budgeting
- Knowledge of data collection and evaluation processes and understanding of the research lifecycle
Qualifications
- Advanced degree, Masters or Doctorate, in a relevant field (MS, MPH, MBA, PhD, JD) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible administrative experience in a complex environment (10 or more years preferred), with experience in management and supervision of a team of 15 or more.
Nice to Have
- Terminal Degree (PhD, JD, MBA, etc.) directly related to position duties
- Background in change management or organizational development
- Experience with University of Michigan and Michigan Medicine administrative systems, financial practices, policies, and processes
- Experience with strategy development, program assessment, and organizational culture improvement efforts
