The Safety Officer provides essential safety, security, and fire safety functions at Western Psychiatric Hospital, ensuring a secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors. This role involves conducting patrols, responding to incidents, and assisting clinical staff to maintain order.
Responsibilities
- Conduct searches according to system and department policy regarding customer service responsibilities and maintaining paperwork and property appropriately
- Perform continuous hands-on physical restraint techniques necessary to control violent, combative patients and maintain a safe environment respecting age-specific competencies and guidelines
- Conduct proactive, continuous safety, security, and fire safety patrols throughout the facility and parking areas
- Document and report any unsafe conditions and security violations
- Provide assistance as requested to clinical staff in the care and safety of patients, staff, or visitors who are uncooperative
- Administer assistance during fires, medical emergencies, disaster drills, or any other crisis type situations
- Work closely with appropriate law enforcement, fire, and medical authorities when necessary
- Initiate and investigate any reports of incidents including theft, suspicious activity, vandalism, and personnel safety issues
- Conduct tests of various alarm systems, equipment, including fire extinguishers and security alarms
- Provide escort service for patients, staff, and visitors, as necessary or as directed
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Ability to complete Act 235 certification within 6 months of hire
- Ability to complete Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation certification within 30 days of hire
- Ability to pass UPMC Physical Fitness Standard prior to hire
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 1 year experience in safety, security or related healthcare field preferred.
