The Respiratory Technician assesses and performs basic respiratory care techniques and blood gas analysis for patients within the Adult Respiratory Care Department. This role works as part of the healthcare inpatient team, collaborating with respiratory therapists, nurses, and other hospital staff to deliver patient services and ensure safety.
Responsibilities
- Complete training and demonstrate proficiency in all required competencies for patient care duties
- Perform basic respiratory care techniques including sputum inductions, medication administration, and aerosol/oxygen therapy
- Analyze blood gases and electrolytes from arterial/venous samples
- Calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot blood gas analyzers, including performing and reviewing quality controls and proficiency testing
- Perform EKG diagnostic testing
- Manage equipment rounds and compressed gas cylinders
- Set up and test medical equipment such as ventilators, BiPAP, and nitric oxide delivery machines
- Learn new technical devices and clinical procedures
- Provide reports on patient status to the oncoming shift or supervisor
- Stock and maintain designated areas with appropriate respiratory care equipment
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), or certification within 30 days of hire
- Ability to conduct oneself in a professional manner
- Ability to use sound judgment, tact and dependability
- Excellent organizational, customer service and reading comprehension skills
- Ability to communicate effectively and work well with all levels of hospital personnel
- Proficiency in information technology skills (Microsoft Office software, e-mail and calendar)
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
Nice to Have
- Some college level training in a health or science related degree (e.g., Respiratory Therapy Program student), or previous work experience in a similar position
- Knowledge of all basic respiratory care techniques
- Active membership in the AARC and MSRC
- ACLS
