This role involves assessing care needs, performing basic respiratory care techniques, and conducting blood gas analysis for patients within the Adult Respiratory Care Department. It requires collaboration with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to deliver patient services and ensure safety.
Responsibilities
- Complete training and demonstrate proficiency in all competencies for patient care duties
- Perform basic respiratory care techniques including sputum inductions, medication administration, aerosol, and oxygen therapy
- Analyze blood gases and electrolytes from arterial/venous samples
- Calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot blood gas analyzers
- Perform and review quality controls on blood gas analyzers and proficiency testing
- Document analytical measurements and monitor temperature/humidity in blood gas labs
- Conduct EKG diagnostic testing
- Perform equipment rounds and compressed gas cylinder management
- Assist in performing intra-tracheal aspiration
- Stock and maintain designated areas with appropriate respiratory care equipment
- Perform re-processing of moveable equipment/devices, including inlet gaskets
- Set-up and test equipment such as ventilators, BiPAP, and nitric oxide delivery machines
- Learn new technical devices and clinical procedures
- Provide reports on pertinent observations of patient status to the oncoming shift/supervisor
- Adhere to CLIA/CAP, department, and Michigan Medicine policies and procedures, and Joint Commission guidelines
- Contribute to a positive and inclusive work community by building trusting partnerships and continuously learning
- Maintain a patient-centric care perspective, engaging with patients and families with respect and dignity
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), or certification within 30 days of hire
- Ability to conduct oneself in a professional manner
- Ability to use sound judgment, tact and dependability
- Excellent organizational, customer service and reading comprehension skills
- Ability to communicate effectively and work well with all levels of hospital personnel
- Proficiency in information technology skills (including Microsoft Office software, e-mail and calendar); proven record of effectively learning and utilizing computer systems and technology
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
Nice to Have
- Some college level training in a health or science related degree (e.g., Respiratory Therapy Program student)
- Previous work experience in a similar position
- Knowledge of all basic respiratory care techniques
- Active membership in the AARC and MSRC
- ACLS
