This Research Project Coordinator role supports the Alabama Water Institute’s CONSERVE Research Group by assisting with the development, management, and implementation of research projects focused on ecosystem restoration and native rivercane. The role involves fieldwork for biological sampling, GIS mapping, and data collection, primarily working with Tribal communities and partners across the southeastern United States.
Responsibilities
- Support the overall development of research project(s)
- Assist with project design, management, and implementation
- Promote the project and serve as liaison between the project and internal/external contacts
- May supervise students and provide general office assistance
- Create promotional materials and assist in the development of other potential projects
- Conduct fieldwork for biological sampling of rivercane population genetics
- Use Geographic Information Science (GIS) to create maps of rivercane population inventory and characteristics
- Take detailed field notes and ecological data for inventoried areas
- Support rivercane stand germplasm development
- Support field activities and manage data collection throughout the Southeastern U.S.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or higher
- Some experience coordinating projects
- Valid U.S. driver's license
- Must be at least 19 years of age
- Acceptable Motor Vehicle Report
- Strong leadership skills

- Good communication skills, both written and verbal
- Geographic Information Systems skills with experience using ESRI Arc GIS
- Excellent computer skills (spreadsheet applications, personal computing networks, internet software)
- Ability to work effectively with interdisciplinary groups under high levels of activity
- Detail oriented and manage details to meet deadlines
- Ability to anticipate and plan proactively for known deadlines and annual reporting cycles
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or higher
- Some experience coordinating projects
Nice to Have
- Advanced degree (master's or doctorate) in a science related field or other discipline connected to water or environment
- 3+ years of experience conducting environmental, science-based field research and coordinating Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data collection
- Interest in applied science and water-related scholarship that impacts communities
- Ability and interest to apply Traditional Ecological knowledge
- Experience working on complex field projects, with broad groups, and across disciplines
