This Registered Nurse (RN) position in Pre-Op/PACU at Mayo Clinic involves coordinating nursing care, providing direct patient care, and educating patients and families through the pre-operative and post-operative phases. The role requires assessing and resolving issues, administering medications, monitoring IVs, and caring for patients recovering from various types of anesthesia.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education, and transitions of care
- Support professional nursing practice across practice settings and continuum of care to meet patient and family needs
- Function within the Mayo Nursing Care Model, planning, implementing, evaluating, and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients
- Provide leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts
- Delegate patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability, and availability of resources
- Focus on patient care before and immediately following surgical procedures, including Pre-Op, Phase 1 PACU, and Phase 2 PACU
- Assess, quickly identify, and resolve pre-operative issues
- Start and monitor IVs, administer pre-operative medications, and perform pre-operative instruction and explanation of patient's rights and procedures
- Provide care for post-op patients recovering from general, regional, and local anesthesia in the PACU
Requirements
- Graduate of a nursing program
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
- Experience working in a team environment
- Ability to work flexible hours, including days, evenings, nights, holidays, weekends, and on-call
- Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting
- Demonstrated leadership
- Effective communicator
- Excellent critical thinking skills
Qualifications
- Graduate of a nursing program
- Entry-level, one year of RN experience in an applicable care setting is preferred.
Nice to Have
- Graduate of a baccalaureate nursing program
- One year of RN experience in an applicable care setting
- Prior experience with electronic medical record systems
