The Probation/Parole Officer 1 is an entry-level position responsible for supervising probationers and parolees, ensuring compliance with release requirements, and assisting in their rehabilitation. This role involves conducting investigations, maintaining detailed records, and collaborating with various legal and law enforcement agencies.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and maintain offenders' records and reports, identifying criminal activities and background information.
- Monitor offenders to ensure compliance with release requirements and policy procedures.
- Interview probationers and parolees regularly to evaluate progress and compliance with probation contracts and rehabilitation plans.
- Conduct pre-hearing and pre-release investigations, testifying in court or parole hearings as required.
- Act as a liaison with judges, court personnel, law enforcement, and other agencies involved in probation/parole programs.
- Address non-compliance by offenders with appropriate Graduated Sanctions, including writing warrants and reports.
- Supervise probationers on community-based sentences, including electronically monitored home detention and field visits.
- Administer drug and alcohol tests, including random drug screens, to verify compliance with substance abuse treatment.
- Conduct validated risk and needs assessments using motivational and interview techniques to determine re-offense risk and identify criminogenic factors.
- Handle offender complaints and grievances quickly and professionally.
- Qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons.
- Conduct searches of offender residences, vehicles, and persons as required by policy.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or full-time relevant professional experience on a year-for-year basis
- Willingness to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons
- At least 18 years of age
- US Citizen
- Good moral character
- No conviction for felony or domestic assault
- No other than honorable discharge from US armed forces
- Pass physical examination
- Pass psychological evaluation
- Pass pre-employment screening test for illegal drugs
- Possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license
- Successfully complete all prescribed courses at the Tennessee Correction Academy
