About This Role

Independently perform and evaluate routine and specialized overnight polysomnograms (PSG's) to ensure patient safety and provide technical expertise. Score PSGs according to established guidelines and protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and evaluate routine and specialized overnight polysomnograms (PSG's) and multiple sleep latency tests (MSLTs)
  • Ensure patient safety during testing procedures
  • Score PSGs according to established guidelines and protocols
  • Provide technical expertise to Polysomnography Technician
  • Apply recording devices to the patient, clean and sterilize equipment, and calibrate equipment
  • Review existing information in patient record and examine orders and protocols for study
  • Explain test procedures to patients and recognize chief sleep/wake complaint
  • Communicate with ordering physician or Sleep Lab medical staff to clarify unclear or inappropriate orders
  • Measure and apply appropriate EEG electrodes using the International 10-20 system
  • Apply appropriate EKG, EMG, and EOG monitoring electrodes
  • Apply and securely attach recording transducers, thermocouples, oximetry probes, and CO2 monitors
  • Perform physiological calibrations to verify proper functioning of equipment
  • Monitor the PSG, note and correct equipment malfunctions, and change patient's body position as needed
  • End the PSG, wake the patient, and carefully remove recording equipment
  • Generate a report summarizing sleep/wake data and physiological events
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to patient's medical problems and physiological events
  • Safely lift and move patients without harm
  • Comply with Universal Infection Control procedures and properly disinfect and sterilize equipment
  • Appropriately handle hazardous materials such as acetone or collodion
  • Administer oxygen, continuous and BI-level positive airway pressure in accordance with established protocols
  • Understand indications, contraindications, and adverse effects of CPAP, BI-level PAP and oxygen administration
  • Independently perform special procedures including esophageal pressure monitoring, infant/pediatric polysomnography, ambulatory monitoring, and portable (in patient) polysomnography
  • Perform and score PSGs for evaluation of parasomnias and seizures
  • Conduct MSLTs and score MSLTs according to established guidelines
  • Evaluate infant/pediatric patients, and properly perform PSGs for evaluation of sleep apnea, parasomnias and seizures
  • Perform sleep research protocols

Requirements

  • High school diploma
  • Basic computer knowledge
  • Board certification by BRPT
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider verification from American Heart Association

Qualifications

  • High school diploma

Nice to Have

  • Basic knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the human body
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Previous college course work in general sciences
