About This Role

The Patient Care Technician, under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, provides direct patient care and technical support, performing delegated specialized procedures and assisting with more complex diagnostic testing, while contributing to the improvement of patient care services.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain and report vital signs, temperature, height/length, weight, oxygen saturation and pain scores, and respond to monitor alarms.
  • Perform point of care testing, collect various specimens including blood, urine, stool, and sputum, and initiate/maintain 24-hour urine collections.
  • Assist patients with routine personal hygiene, preventative skin care, toileting, ambulation, transfers, and feeding, including tube feedings after RN verification.
  • Perform wound care including cleansing, redressing non-sterile wounds, simple sterile dressing changes, and caring for permanent drainage sites.
  • Assist with respiratory care tasks such as tracheostomy care, endotracheal/tracheostomy tube suctioning, and coaching patients in incentive spirometry and deep breathing.
  • Perform other interventions including applying TED hose and SCDs, post-mortem care, responding to call lights, and assisting with admissions, discharges, and transfers.
  • Maintain the patient care environment by stocking supplies, setting up rooms, making beds, cleaning equipment, and performing clerical duties as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent
  • Ability to read and write

Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent

Nice to Have

  • Junior status in an accredited BSN program
  • 2nd year in accredited ADN program
  • Bachelor's Degree in Applied Medical Science
  • Minimum 1-year recent experience in an unlicensed assistive role in a hospital setting
  • Minimum two years' experience in an unlicensed assistive role in a nursing home or other health care environment
