About This Role

This role involves providing safe and effective dialysis therapy to patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, ensuring compliance with regulations and contributing to quality enhancement programs. The Patient Care Technician is responsible for setting up and operating hemodialysis machines and maintaining a clean work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in providing patient-specific education regarding adequacy measures and disease process/access.
  • Welcome patients and inquire about their well-being since the last treatment.
  • Evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated.
  • Obtain necessary pre- and post-treatment vital signs and weight.
  • Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders, including blood and dialysate flow.
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems and provide intervention as prescribed or directed.
  • Monitor patients' response to dialysis therapy and perform all functions necessary for discontinuation of treatment.
  • Perform and record pre- and post-dialysis evaluation, weight, and vital signs.
  • Calculate and enter individual patients’ dialysis machine programming for Ultrafiltration goal, treatment time, and UF modeling.
  • Record accurate and timely information regarding vital signs and treatment parameters on the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet.
  • Report any significant information or change in patient condition directly to the registered nurse or supervisor.
  • Assist in training applicable direct patient care staff under the supervision of a nurse.
  • Clean and disinfect dialysis machine surface, chair, equipment, and surrounding area between treatments.
  • Complete and document ongoing participation in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities.
  • Review treatment sheets for completeness and ensure nursing signatures are documented.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or G.E.D.
  • Meet CMS-approved state and/or national certification requirements within required timeline.
  • All appropriate state licensure, education, and training (if any) required.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or G.E.D.
  • Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting or a related facility preferred.

Nice to Have

  • Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting or a related facility.
