About This Role

This role involves decontamination, preparation, and sterilization of surgical instruments and medical items according to industry standards. The Instrument Processor ensures the safe handling and distribution of these processed items to support patient care at Michigan Medicine.

Responsibilities

  • Decontaminate instruments and other items and equipment following industry standards (UMHS/AAMI/AORN)
  • Assemble, package, and prepare instrument/instrument sets and other re-usable items
  • Perform sterilization tasks including Steam, EtO, H2O2, and Pasteurization (site dependent)
  • Competently operate department equipment according to safe practices
  • Follow policies for sterilization testing and monitoring
  • Accurately document indicators such as BI reports and Challenge tests
  • Bring to the attention of management any matters regarding/questioning processing sterilization
  • Handle and distribute processed items according to practices for the site (e.g., case carts)

Requirements

  • For OR Instrument Processor I: Graduate of Instrument Processing Program including completed externship OR 1 year of instrument reprocessing work experience
  • For OR Instrument Processor II: Certification
  • For OR Instrument Processor II: Minimum 1.5 years’ CSS experience
  • For OR Instrument Processor II: Demonstrated competency with 80% of trays within assigned work areas
  • For OR Instrument Processor II: Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, in addition to being able to take direction
  • Ability to take rotating weekend call, with 30 minute response time

Qualifications

  • For Processor I: Graduate of Instrument Processing Program including completed externship or 1 year of instrument reprocessing work experience. For Processor II: Minimum 1.5 years CSS experience.
