About This Role

Examine eyes, correct vision defects, and determine the scope of visual function for individuals committed to the Department of Corrections. This role involves prescribing, fitting, and adjusting glasses while maintaining security within the correctional facility.

Responsibilities

  • Examine eyes and correct defects using lenses, prisms, or eye exercises
  • Determine accommodative and refractive states of the eye and scope of its function
  • Measure powers of vision and adapt lenses for aiding vision
  • Use diagnostic tools such as retinoscope, ophthalmometer, phoropter, and Snellen chart
  • Prescribe, fit, adjust, and repair glasses
  • Instruct ancillary medical staff in optometry techniques and methods
  • Keep records, prepare reports, and dictate correspondence
  • Maintain order and supervise the conduct of persons committed to the Department of Corrections
  • Prevent escapes and injury by inmates to themselves, others, or property
  • Maintain security of working areas and work materials
  • Inspect premises and search inmates for contraband

Requirements

  • Valid license to practice optometry in the State of California
  • Two years of experience in the practice of optometry

Qualifications

  • Two years of experience in the practice of optometry
