About This Role

The Operator Maintenance performs a combination of equipment operations, preventive maintenance, and manual labor tasks for roadway maintenance. This includes operating equipment for emergency roadway operations, such as snow and ice removal, and performing general maintenance and construction tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain light, medium, and heavy-duty highway equipment for maintenance and construction tasks.
  • Perform emergency roadway operations, including snow and ice removal and debris clearance after accidents.
  • Provide traffic control and apply MUTCD for detours, work zones, and lane closures.
  • Participate as a working crew member to complete projects and objectives, performing manual labor as needed.
  • Perform maintenance repair, replacement, and preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
  • Install, maintain, and remove traffic control devices in assigned areas following MUTCD guidelines.
  • Maintain knowledge of current safety rules, regulations, laws, and procedures (OSHA, VOSHA).
  • Complete pre-trip inspections for any vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Clean up after accidents and maintain a safe work environment.
  • Maintain inventory records and complete necessary paperwork.

Requirements

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor
  • Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions
  • Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair
  • Safety shoes

Nice to Have

  • Training, experience, or education in Maintenance, Vehicle Operations or related field
  • Experience in emergency operations, including snow removal, storms, and accident clean-up
  • Experience in roadway maintenance and construction
  • Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs
  • Valid Commercial Drivers License with appropriate endorsements
