About This Role

This role involves performing physical examinations, treating cancer treatment complications, and monitoring patient progress in an oncology setting. It requires collaboration with a healthcare team while maintaining responsibility for clinical patient management.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure patient information, visit history, refer outs, lab follow-up, phone calls, and consults are carefully and completely documented in the electronic medical record
  • Conduct in-depth interviews with patients and/or family, construct comprehensive medical histories, perform initial and periodic physical examinations and explore patient's interpretation of health needs
  • Identify and treat patients' diseases
  • Directly perform or order appropriate diagnostic studies and interpret finished results
  • Develop and implement long and short-range treatment plans
  • Perform procedures such as bone marrow biopsy
  • Instruct and counsel patients and families regarding preventive care, medical problems, psychological problems, and use of prescribed treatments and drugs
  • Write orders to increase, decrease or change medication, subject to checking and countersigning by physician
  • Identify and record pertinent progress of patients, updating and summarizing charts, changing orders when appropriate and notifying the responsible physician of changes in the patient's condition
  • Assist with hospital call duties by maintaining hospital privileges

Requirements

  • Master's degree in nursing
  • Current certificate of completion from a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program
  • Current and unrestricted license to practice
  • National Certification required upon employment (Nurse Practitioners)

  • Master's degree in nursing
  • Oncology experience preferred but not required
