About This Role

The Medical Laboratory Technician at North Mississippi Health Services coordinates phlebotomist workflow in Specimen Processing, ensures efficient transportation of lab supplies and specimens, and adheres to regulatory guidelines for specimen handling. This role reports accurate laboratory test results, maintains quality control standards, and provides excellent customer service to NMHS staff, patients, and families.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate workflow of phlebotomists in the Specimen Processing area.
  • Assure accurate and efficient transportation of lab-related supplies, equipment, and specimens.
  • Follow all laws and regulations in the processing and transportation of laboratory specimens.
  • Follow regulatory guidelines in handling and processing laboratory specimens.
  • Follow proper policy for accurate patient identification and labeling of all specimens.
  • Effectively communicate with all NMHS staff, patients, their family members, and customers.
  • Assure proper service recovery for patients and/or caregivers when necessary.
  • Answer telephone in a polite and efficient manner.
  • Work as part of a team with all Pathology and NMHS employees.
  • Assure department testing is reported in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Assist with meeting goals of department Performance Improvement initiatives.
  • Assure appropriate documentation of all required instrument monthly maintenance and quality control.
  • Participate in continuing education programs to maintain and expand skills.
  • Adhere to NMHS/NMMC Policies/Procedures/Guidelines and comply with appropriate Local/State/Federal policies/procedures/guideline/regulations/laws/statues.
  • Adhere to College of American Pathologist (CAP) & Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) standards.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree of Arts as a Medical Laboratory Technician from a CAHEA/NAACLS accredited program
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist students in their fourth year of study who have successfully completed a clinical rotation may be hired into PRN MLT position.
  • Valid Driver's License and acceptable driving record/history.
  • Good organizational and communication (written and verbal) skills.
  • Knowledge of and appropriate handling of biohazardous specimens.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize daily work demands of area.
  • Ability to evaluate processes and equipment for optimal organization and performance.
  • Ability to provide excellent service to internal and external customers.
  • Ability to assure quality control is acceptable and required maintenance is completed daily in work area.
  • Ability to reflect a positive, caring attitude toward clients, patients, staff and the public.
  • ASCP Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician required within 12 months after incumbent's graduation from an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician Program or re-certification within 90 days if lapsed.
  • ASCP Medical Technologist certification within 1 year; if lapsed >10 years, retake exam.

Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree of Arts as a Medical Laboratory Technician from a CAHEA/NAACLS accredited program or Medical Laboratory Scientist students in their fourth year of study who have successfully completed a clinical rotation.
  • 10+ years of experience in a clinic or hospital laboratory in lieu of certification.
