Serve as a subject matter expert for nuclear facility electrical, mechanical, and structural engineering matters. This role supports the Laboratory's mission by addressing all aspects of facility systems within and around the plutonium facility, and requires the ability to perform complex engineering studies and calculations.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the subject matter expert for nuclear facility electrical, mechanical, and structural engineering matters
- Perform engineering studies, including short circuit, device coordination, equipment sizing, and arc flash analysis
- Address issues related to HVAC, power quality, fluid/utility systems, and critical power reliability
- Handle renovation, modification, and development of structures within and around the plutonium facility
- Become familiar with pressure safety, leak testing requirements, piping supports, and flow requirements
- Design cranes, crane girders/support structures, canopies, and equipment support stands
- Develop design details, calculations, load studies, specifications, and special inspections
- Evaluate and trend system health for facility structural systems
- Mentor junior engineers (at Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2 level)
Requirements
- Knowledge of major commercial, industrial, or nuclear facility systems (e.g., HVAC, Compressed Air)
- Knowledge of design, operation, and maintenance of facility related mechanical systems
- Knowledge of troubleshooting mechanical systems
- Demonstrated experience in application of codes and standards in a highly regulated work environment (IBC, IEBC, ASHRE, B31)
- Ability to perform analysis and calculations required to support engineered solutions
- Ability to effectively communicate engineering solutions both verbally and written
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university
- 2+ years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities (3+ years for Engineer 2 level)
Nice to Have
- Experience with chilled water systems
- Experience with mechanical system computational software (e.g., AFT Fathom/Arrow, Pipe Flow, Train Trace)
- Experience with nuclear air handling system requirements
- Experience as a mechanical engineer at a DOE non-reactor nuclear facility
- Experience with the application of DOE Orders and Standards as related to facility systems
- Experience working within an ASME NQA-1 or similar quality program
