The Mechanical Engineer will research, plan, design, and develop mechanical products and systems for naval ships, specifically focusing on weapon systems for the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard. This role involves managing assigned shipboard systems from design to production and resolving technical issues.
Responsibilities
- Research, plan, design and develop mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy.
- Apply research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.
- Establish, oversee, and manage all activities related to assigned shipboard systems.
- Perform research, development, and design of Naval Weapon systems including Weapons Handling and Magazine stowage systems in accordance with contractual requirements, military and commercial specifications.
- Initiate procurement specifications and review/approve vendor proposals.
- Review, comment on, adjudicate and approve vendor furnished information for translation into construction products.
- Interface with vendors and Navy technical representatives; support vendor design reviews and testing.
- Develop drawings and other documents in accordance with Mil-Specs and contract drawings.
- Interface with other disciplines and departments to ensure seamless integration of assigned systems into the shipboard environment.
- Address and resolve technical issues, and make decisions on problems in area of responsibility; support shipbuilding production department as required.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science degree in a related field and 5 years of experience (or Master's with 3 years, PhD with 0 years)
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree in a related field
- 5 years with a Bachelor of Science degree in a related field; 3 years of relevant professional experience with a Master's Degree; 0 years with a PhD
Nice to Have
- Experience with Armament systems (e.g., Torpedo Tubes, Decoy Lchrs, RAM, NSSMS, VLS, CIWS, 5"/62 Gun Mts, Small Arms)
- Proficiency in AutoCAD
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
