About This Role

This role involves working as a Nonmetals and Flammability Materials Engineer for human-rated capsules within the Lunar Permanence business unit, developing Blue Origin’s Blue Moon landers and related products. The engineer will plan, execute, and interpret flammability testing, assessing various materials and mitigating risks in high oxygen environments. This role contributes to building sustainable infrastructure for lunar transport and mentoring junior engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, execute, and interpret flammability testing for materials, components, and processes used in human-rated space capsules, applying NASA-STD-6001B and NASA-STD-6016.
  • Assess softgoods, foams, adhesives, coatings, flammability risks, and toxic atmosphere risks, with knowledge of high oxygen concentration environments on materials.
  • Collaborate with multi-functional teams responsible for selecting materials, manufacturing processes, and suppliers for human-rated space capsules.
  • Review and approve drawings for conformance to the Lunar Crew Lander Parts, Materials, and Process Plan.
  • Assist in addressing and dispositioning nonconformances and implementing corrective actions.
  • Find opportunities for improvements to quality, cost, and schedule.
  • Coach, mentor, and technically assist other engineers.

Requirements

  • BS in Mechanical, Aerospace or Materials engineering
  • 10+ years of experience in human spaceflight product development
  • Direct experience in applying NASA-STD-6001B and NASA-STD-6016

Qualifications

  • BS in Mechanical, Aerospace or Materials engineering
  • 10+ years of experience in human spaceflight product development

Nice to Have

  • MS/PhD in Mechanical, Aerospace or Materials engineering
  • 15+ years of experience in human spaceflight product development
  • Previous experience in a similar position
