About This Role

Lead and manage a science and engineering team within a nuclear facility, supporting national security missions by processing plutonium, uranium, and actinide materials. Ensure operational effectiveness, safety, and compliance with nuclear facility requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and define strategic objectives for the team
  • Establish scope, schedule, and budget through work package development, resource, and performance management
  • Ensure worker qualification and authorization for tasks
  • Ensure administrative and operating procedures are current, understood, and adhered to
  • Work with facility operations staff to execute work safely, securely, with quality, and in compliance with nuclear facility requirements
  • Provide direct daily oversight of work, workers, and the work environment
  • Serve as the safety responsible line manager over people, equipment, and processes
  • Communicate work status, deliverables, and commitments to line management
  • Direct and oversee work performed by employees, including hands-on supervision
  • Mentor and motivate scientists, engineers, technologists, and technicians
  • Provide financial stewardship over budget, procurement, time and labor, travel, and property

Requirements

  • Experience in managing teams with different backgrounds and research projects
  • Experience creating work scope, schedules, budgets, coordinating work activities, and tracking progress
  • Demonstrated experience with financial stewardship and identification of resource requirements
  • Ability to effectively supervise, negotiate, conduct conflict resolution, mentor, and develop personnel
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Experience performing work in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience executing work in compliance with safety and facility requirements while maintaining formality of operations

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, with a preference for a Ph.D. in chemistry or material science, or a Bachelor's degree in engineering or related science or technology per DOE Order 426.2a
  • 5 years of related experience in managing teams and research projects, particularly in a nuclear environment

Nice to Have

  • Experience with nuclear high hazard facility operating requirements, safety authorization basis, and/or Conduct of Operations planning and execution of work
  • Experience obtaining funding and leading chemistry or material science research projects
  • Experience working as a member of a multidisciplinary team
  • Active DOE Q Clearance and HRP Certification
