This role is responsible for leading the University of Pennsylvania's international fundraising strategies in an assigned region, focusing on cultivating and soliciting principal and major gifts. The Managing Director will manage a frontline fundraiser and serve as an expert resource on international fundraising trends and cultural nuances for various university stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Develop short- and long-term strategies for donor cultivation, solicitation, engagement, and stewardship for assigned region(s)
- Strategize targeted prospect activity with the goal of closing major and principal gifts
- Manage specific international geographical regions and portfolios of principal and major gift prospects
- Work with school and center directors to create school/center strategies and set expectations for international prospect activity
- Serve as an advocate for international constituents, recognizing their interests and needs and advising colleagues
- Work closely with donors and prospective donors to plan and execute cultivation, stewardship, and outreach events
- Identify and develop volunteer leadership in the region
- Serve as an internal resource for DAR and university leadership planning international trips
- Develop an understanding of cultural protocols in targeted region(s) and inform colleagues
- Manage one of the frontline fundraisers on the team to maximize fundraising efforts and results
- Represent International Development at meetings, events, and professional conferences
Requirements
- 7-10 years of progressive fundraising experience
- Experience managing a frontline fundraiser
- Extensive international travel availability
- Strong planning, organizational skills, and attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple projects independently under pressure
- Comfortable with ambiguity and unfamiliar settings/cultures
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Competency with standard software applications
- Valid Passport and U.S. driver's license
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, or equivalent
- 7 to 10 years of progressive fundraising, with a preferred emphasis on international major gifts fundraising

- Advanced degree
- Higher education experience
- Knowledge of international cross-border charitable giving and tax regimes (UK Gift Aid, TGE, Canada, Hong Kong tax incentives)
- Cultural understanding and sensitivity; experience working in an international market
- Knowledge of a foreign language
