Maintenance Worker I

About This Role

This role involves performing a variety of light to heavy manual labor tasks to maintain and repair public infrastructure and facilities for the City of Dallas. The Maintenance Worker I will assist in street, storm drain, and sewer line maintenance, as well as grounds and facility upkeep using light equipment.

Responsibilities

• Assist in setting forms, mixing and pouring concrete, spreading asphalt, and applying crack seal for street and sidewalk maintenance
• Operate air and jackhammers to break out old concrete or asphalt
• Assist in laying various pipes for storm, sanitary sewers, drains, or water mains
• Load and unload tools, construction materials, and equipment onto trucks
• Flag traffic and deploy safety devices such as barricades and cones
• Dig ditches and trenches, performing grading, trimming, shoveling, and debris removal
• Assist in cleaning drainage ditches, inlets, storm drains, and sewer lines using power-operated equipment
• Drive dump trucks, tractor-driven mowers, or other equipment to transport materials
• Perform preventive maintenance on equipment
• Cut grass, remove litter and weeds, clean floors and facility grounds for upkeep and safety
• Provide landscape maintenance at golf courses and public areas
• Perform Facility Safety Inspections, MED Inspections, and check fire extinguishers

Requirements

• Ability to obtain Texas Driver's License during probationary period
• Ability to follow specific or general verbal and written instructions
• Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical labor for extended periods
• Ability to lift and work with equipment

• Knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, painting, mechanics, landscaping, and specialized equipment
• Knowledge, use, and care of hand and power tools (jackhammer, cement mixer, power auger)
• Knowledge of surface preparation/adaptability of various surface materials
• Knowledge of standard colors, configuration, and placement of lane markings and traffic signs
• Knowledge of water meter cleaning
