About This Role

The Maintenance Assistant performs basic maintenance of equipment and facilities, conducts manual and semi-skilled labor, and provides customer service. This role is responsible for maintaining City of Durham parks or indoor recreation facilities to adopted maintenance standards.

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic maintenance of equipment and resolve minor equipment issues, including repairs, installations, plumbing, painting, and carpentry duties.
  • Execute manual and semi-skilled labor, assisting with painting, floor repair/replacement, and mixing/pouring concrete.
  • Provide customer service by responding to questions and concerns, and offer information on established policies and procedures.
  • Maintain records, perform data entry, generate work orders, conduct inventory checks, and recommend supply orders.
  • Perform weekend work and special projects, such as playground installations.
  • Observe safety precautions and follow appropriate procedures.
  • Load and unload equipment and materials, secure equipment on trailers, and maintain/fuel equipment (Outdoor Park Crews).
  • Perform mowing, trimming, edging, blowing, and cleanup of assigned parks, restrooms, and shelters (Outdoor Park Crews).
  • Remove brush, limbs, debris, clean storm drains, spray weeds, and remove silt/dirt from walks (Outdoor Park Crews).
  • Perform janitorial, housekeeping, and custodial duties; clean and maintain floors and other indoor/outdoor areas (Indoor Recreation Facilities).
  • Empty trash, dust, sanitize bathrooms, clean mirrors and windows, and replenish sanitation items (Indoor Recreation Facilities).

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write and follow directions.
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.

Qualifications

  • Ability to read, write, and follow directions. 1 year of experience in commercial mowing and landscaping required for outdoor park crews.

Nice to Have

  • Minimum of one year experience in semi-skilled manual labor (mowing, weed eating)
  • Experience operating commercial lawn maintenance equipment such as Zero Turn Riding mowers.
  • Willingness to work flexible work hours and schedules.
