About This Role

Perform general custodial duties and maintenance for a building or assigned area within the Auxiliary Services Department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Responsibilities

• Remove trash, recyclables, and waste from assigned areas and place receptacles at designated site
• Wash trash, recycling, and waste receptacles by scrubbing and rinsing
• Clean and restock bathrooms and lavatories
• Maintain walls, ceilings, doors, and horizontal surfaces by dusting and washing
• Maintain furniture by dusting, washing, and polishing
• Clean glass and mirrors
• Maintain carpeted areas by vacuuming and cleaning
• Maintain hard floor surfaces by sweeping, mopping, stripping, and waxing
• Assist in keeping exterior areas immediately adjacent to buildings clean by sweeping and removing trash, snow, and ice
• Move and arrange furniture per specific room plans
• Perform simple general repairs by replacing belts, tightening screws, and cleaning equipment
• Replace light bulbs or fluorescent tubes
• Provide basic security functions by locking doors and windows, and reporting incidents

Requirements

• Knowledge of methods used in institutional cleaning
• Ability to withstand physical strain of performing manual tasks, climbing stairs, lifting, climbing ladders, and bending
• Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions
• Ability to use simple hand and power cleaning equipment
• Ability to read setup sheets and execute timely room setups as per diagrams
