This role involves providing comprehensive academic advising to College of Humanities and Fine Arts (HFA) students, including those in exploratory tracks, music, and other performing arts programs. The advisor will guide students through registration, course selection, academic planning, and address at-risk situations to support their success within a diverse student population.
Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive, individualized, and small-group advising to a diverse student population during academic year, orientation, and registration periods
- Partner with departments to build community within student majors
- Respond to registration-related matters, including general education, major/college requirements, and course enrollment guidance
- Assist students with transition, goal setting, self-assessment, time management, planning, and decision-making for academic plans and course selection
- Identify and respond to at-risk students experiencing academic and critical personal difficulties with proactive interventions
- Provide targeted outreach and support to students on Academic Warning and Academic Probation
- Respond to inquiries from parents in accordance with FERPA
- Help develop and offer activities and workshops for HFA students, including information sessions
- Participate in HFA activities like Fall Visit Days, Destination Days, and Senior Celebration
- Represent HFA Undergraduate Advising on College and University-level committees and councils
- Assist in training new professional advisors by providing current information about HFA requirements
- Collaborate with Undergraduate Program Directors to clear undergraduate students for Graduation (Senior Academic Advisor)
- Provide supplemental professional development in HFA Advising Staff Meetings on a bi-monthly basis (Senior Academic Advisor)
- Support the hiring and training of new undergraduate employees (Senior Academic Advisor)
- Execute special projects to support the mission of the HFA Advising and Career Center
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree
- Documented experience in academic advising, student support, or other related student-facing roles specific to visual and performing arts
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Strong organizational skills
- Intermediate-level computer proficiency
- Ability to take initiative and work independently and collaboratively
- Demonstrated commitment to continued learning or professional development on diversity, equity, and justice issues
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- Documented experience in academic advising, student support, or other related student-facing roles specific to visual and performing arts. A minimum of two years for Senior Academic Advisor.
Nice to Have
- Bachelor’s degree in music or other performing arts field
- Master's degree in Education, Humanities and Fine Arts, or related field
- Experience serving or working with a large culturally diverse population
- Able to manage a high volume of complex and varied client needs
- Able to recognize at-risk individuals and provide appropriate support and direction
- Knowledgeable concerning FERPA, Title IX, and University Academic Rules and Regulations
- Professional teaching experience (Senior Academic Advisor)
