The Machinist III is responsible for setting up and operating conventional, special purpose, and numerical control (NC) machines to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts, ensuring all manufactured components meet precise specifications.
Responsibilities
- Study blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions, tolerances, sequence of operations, and setup requirements
- Measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points on material or work piece for machining guides
- Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers
- Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, depth and angle of cut, or enter commands for computerized machine control media
- Observe machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjust machine controls or control media as required
- Verify conformance of finished work piece to specifications
- Set up and operate machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data
- Fit and assemble parts into complete assembly and verify dimensions and alignment
- Install machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and test operation to ensure functionality and performance
- Operate welding equipment to cut or weld parts
- Develop specifications from general description and draw sketches of parts or products to be fabricated
- Confer with engineers, production personnel, or programmers to resolve machining or assembly problems
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED
- 5+ years related experience and/or training
- Ability to read blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, and specifications
- Experience with conventional, special purpose, and numerical control (NC) machines (mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, shapers)
- Ability to measure, mark, and scribe dimensions
- Ability to calculate and set controls for machining factors
- Ability to detect malfunctions and adjust machine controls
Qualifications
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- 5 to 7 years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience
