This Law Clerk position supports a large federal agency's legal mission by performing litigation support tasks including cite checking, document review, and legal research. The role involves contributing to government innovation and collaborating to anticipate needs.
Responsibilities
- Work under the direction of a Project Supervisor or Project Manager
- Perform complex legal research for trial staff
- Assist in preparing draft legal documents (motions, briefs, memoranda of law)
- Review and conduct research for ROI (Release of Information)
- Review new cases and conduct research of pertinent laws
- Edit previously submitted final decisions and write/research legal opinions on newest cases
- Edit and review cases for issuance
- Respond to citizen letters
- Review AMICUS briefs
- Brief attorneys regarding legal issues, theories and draft statement of facts
- Assist attorneys with all phases of litigation
- Cite checking via online legal research tools (Westlaw and Lexis) and blue book
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree or equivalent legal training/education
- Sound working knowledge of federal and state court systems
- Sound working knowledge of legal research procedures and resources
- Thorough knowledge of legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw
- Extensive experience with cite checking and blue book
- Experience performing complex legal research
- Hands-on familiarity with word processing, databases (document review, file management), spreadsheets, and imaging applications
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree, or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school, having completed at least one year of study, OR an equivalent level of legal training or experience or an equivalent level of education
Nice to Have
- Experience working in a Government and/or Litigation Support environment
- Experience with Relativity
- Publication of legal writings
- Participation in Law Review
- Current or active clearance
