Landfill Maintenance Technician

About This Role

This position is responsible for performing technical duties in the maintenance of landfill facilities and equipment, focusing on gas/leachate extraction, groundwater monitoring systems, and various related infrastructure and reporting requirements.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine and emergency maintenance and repair at active and closed landfills involving Gas/Leachate (condensate) Extraction System and groundwater monitoring system
• Employ corrective measures to control gas migration and surface outbreaks
• Submit required reports to proper authority
• Use electric and pneumatic pump systems to control leachate collection from monitoring wells
• Transport and supervise inmate detail assignments
• Inspect and continually maintain sediment ponds, leachate collection system, wastewater pump station, and various other specialty equipment
• Oversee the building and maintenance of access roads, slope grades, and erosion control
• Operate water truck, excavator, grinder, and bulldozers
• Enforce regulations mandated by Federal, State, and Local Environmental Organizations
• Assist consultants and contractors with the collection of required constituents to submit E.P.D. reports and ensure finished product meets specifications

Requirements

• Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques for waste disposal activities
• Knowledge of federal and state regulations concerning landfill operation
• Knowledge of report preparation, filing, and records management
• Skill in reading design and operational plans and understanding technical/scientific terminology
• Skill in problem solving and decision making
• Skill in repair and maintenance of landfill equipment
• Ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations
• Ability to operate a motor vehicle
• Ability to pass Department of Corrections three-day certification within required timeframe for supervising inmate labor

Qualifications

• High school education with specialized training in the occupational field
• 1-2 years of experience in a similar position or completion of an apprenticeship/internship
