Perform technical duties to support the operation and maintenance of instructional laboratories for Physics and related sciences at Cerritos College. This role involves setting up, demonstrating, overseeing experiments, and designing or testing simulations to assist in student learning.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate with faculty to establish optimal laboratory schedules and supply needs, prioritizing lab preparation orders
- Set up, test, demonstrate, and maintain demonstrations and experiments used in classrooms and laboratories
- Work with faculty to design, construct, modify, or rebuild equipment, modules, and experiments
- Provide technical assistance to students and faculty, troubleshooting and diagnosing equipment problems
- Set up, test, and maintain computer-based experiments and demonstrations using data acquisition software and hardware
- Oversee and provide for the general cleanliness and security of laboratories, work, and storage areas
- Handle and dispose of harmful or hazardous materials according to specific instructions
- Assist instructors in the classroom/laboratory concurrently with lecture or discussion
- Assist with curriculum planning and conduct research of emerging laboratory techniques and methods
- Acquire, maintain, and inventory equipment, materials, and supplies for instructional needs
- Perform repairs on equipment and learning assistance devices
- Maintain records of laboratory activity, including acquisition, maintenance, and distribution of equipment and materials
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Physics or an engineering discipline AND 1 year of laboratory, research, or similar experience
- OR 15 units of upper-division physics coursework AND 2 years of laboratory or experimental environment experience
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Physics or an engineering discipline, or 15 units of upper-division physics coursework
- 1 year of experience in a laboratory, research, or similar environment (or 2 years if having 15 units of upper-division physics coursework)
Nice to Have
- Master's Degree in Physics, Astronomy, Engineering, or a closely related field
- 3 years of experience in the operation and maintenance of equipment utilized in Physics, Astronomy, and Engineering laboratories
- In-depth knowledge of databases and instructional software including MATLAB and Capstone
- 3 years of experience in setting a budget, purchasing logistics, and financial reconciliation
