This role involves inspecting all phases of highway construction and maintenance projects to ensure quality and compliance with design specifications. The inspector will communicate with various stakeholders, document project activities, and oversee project safety and environmental regulations.
Responsibilities
- Inspect all phases of highway construction and maintenance projects
- Ensure construction quality in accordance with plans and specifications
- Communicate with VDOT and external support staff regarding project details and public concerns
- Notify project support staff and the public of traffic changes and project phase start/finish
- Address landowner, business owner, and traveling public concerns
- Ensure construction activities comply with contract, plans, environmental, EEO, and DBE guidelines
- Assist with notifications to contractor regarding non-compliance issues and resolutions
- Ensure all materials are tested and approved for acceptance before use and payment
- Maintain detailed daily work reports (DWRs) and diaries correlated to contractor activities
- Document all daily occurrences, meetings, and communications, including changes in contractor's scope of work
- Ensure assigned Quality Control tasks are monitored and documented for contract compliance
- Monitor project schedule and determine required support equipment
- Ensure work zones are properly established and maintained, and employees comply with safety practices
- Monitor erosion and sediment control measures for compliance and appropriate maintenance
- Train and oversee the work of other inspectors and trainees assigned to a project
Requirements
- Ability to apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles to determine minor adjustments to construction plans
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
- Ability to maintain detailed records, prepare reports and maintain project files
- Ability to perform physically demanding work in field conditions
- Ability to provide work direction to others in a large construction project
- Ability to read, interpret and analyze roadway, structure and bridge plans, specifications and contract documents
- Knowledge of mathematics to include algebra, geometry and trigonometry
- Knowledge of roadway, structure and bridge construction methods, materials, standards and terminology
- Knowledge of state and federal safety, environmental and equal employment opportunity guidelines and regulations
- Skill in the use of computers and software applications
- Skill in the use of engineering and testing equipment, inspection methods and materials testing
Qualifications
- Experience in construction, civil engineering, project management, or materials inspection
Nice to Have
- Experience in highway and bridge construction inspection with a DOT or consultant inspection firm
- American Concrete Institute (ACI) Concrete Field Level I (CCWA) certification
- WACEL Concrete I Certification
- Asphalt Field Level I certification
- Asphalt Field Level II certification
- CPR with AED, Standard First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogens (BBP) Combined Course
- DEQ: Inspector for Erosion Sediment Control (ESC IN)
- DEQ: Inspector for Storm Water Management (SWM IN)
- Flagger certification
- Guard Rail Installer Training (GRIT)
- Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control Safety certification
- Pavement Marking certification
- Current certifications and completion of fall protection and confined space training
- Proficient in AASHTOWare Project (AWP) or other project management software
- Radiation Safety USDOT HAZMAT Certification (Nuclear Gauge)
- Soils & Aggregate Compaction certification
- Related training, experience, or education in Engineering or Drafting
