About This Role

The Histotechnologist performs all aspects of histologic slide preparations for diagnosis, including routine and special tests, maintenance, quality control, and computer functions under general supervision. This role is crucial for accurate diagnostic support.

Responsibilities

  • Perform embedding with accuracy and efficiency, identifying and orienting tissue according to procedure in a timely manner
  • Perform microtomy with efficiency and accuracy, producing high quality 3-micron sections and troubleshooting difficult cases
  • Perform preventive and routine maintenance and quality control on all equipment, investigating and resolving problems with documentation
  • Perform special histochemical and/or immunohistochemical staining and other special procedures, evaluating results and submitting slides timely
  • Perform routine staining, coverslipping, labeling, and distribution of slides accurately and efficiently
  • Participate in QA/QC programs, test selection, utilization, research procedures, new equipment, systems, and methodologies
  • Participate in the Laboratory’s continuing education program and meet requirements, sharing knowledge through presentations
  • Participate in projects, work groups, teams, task forces or committees, completing responsibilities and communicating to staff

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in science with at least two (2) years of full-time experience in histopathology within the last five (5) years
  • OR Successful completion of an accredited histotechnology program, registry eligible
  • OR Bachelor’s degree with one (1) year of full time experience in histopathology within the last five (5) years
  • Knowledge of histologic theory, practices, and standards
  • Skills in cellular evaluation and interpretation
  • Skill in oral, written and interpersonal communication
  • Skill in basic computers
  • Skill in basic mathematics, data analysis and problem solving
  • Ability to operate and maintain basic laboratory equipment
  • Ability to prioritize work, organize and transfer data accurately
  • Fully vaccinated against Covid-19 or obtain a GBMC approved medical or religious exemption

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in science OR Bachelor’s degree OR successful completion of an accredited histotechnology program
  • Dependent upon level of education acquired; minimum one year experience in histopathology for Bachelor's, two years for Associate's

Certifications

Certification as a registered HT or HTL by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) preferred (Required)
