About This Role

Provide fire protection and life safety subject matter expertise, technical support, and oversight for nuclear and nonnuclear facilities and programs within Los Alamos National Laboratory. The role involves reviewing designs, inspecting construction, and managing fire hazards and risks.

Responsibilities

  • Provide fire protection and life safety subject matter expert (SME) technical support to laboratory facility management and programmatic organizations
  • Support construction projects, including plan review and approval
  • Oversee Lab-wide fire alarm system operations and maintenance
  • Perform fire protection and life safety system commissioning, periodic testing and maintenance oversight
  • Prepare, develop, and review equivalencies and exemptions to DOE Directives, building, and NFPA codes
  • Conduct technical reviews of proposed new activities for fire protection program adherence
  • Sustain and monitor fire protection engineering and loss prevention programs (for Level 3)
  • Implement facility and program fire protection assessment/surveillance programs (for Level 3)
  • Mentor and provide technical leadership to staff (for Level 3)
  • Interface with nuclear facility safety basis professionals (for Level 3)

Requirements

  • Demonstrative ability to perform detailed technical reviews of facility design documents
  • Advanced experience in effectively communicating compliance concerns both verbally and in writing
  • Expert experience in design or plans review of fire protection and life safety features and systems, or documented assessment, analysis, or evaluation of fire hazards and risks
  • Proven leadership in supporting and mentoring more junior engineering staff

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering
  • Minimum of 3 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities for a Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2; 6 years for a Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3.

Nice to Have

  • Active Q Clearance
  • Familiarity with DOE and LANL Engineering Standards as they relate to fire protection
  • Experience with protection of property, assets, and operations as highly-protected risks (HPR)
  • Experience with fire protection and life safety aspects applicable to chemical processes, wet chemistry and laser laboratories, radiological laboratories, high-hazard, and nuclear facilities
  • Reactor or nonreactor nuclear facility experience
  • Knowledge of DOE-O-420.1C, DOE-STD-1066, LANL Engineering Standards Manual, and Conduct of Engineering (CoE) work principles
