About This Role

The Field Engineer (FE) works directly for the Superintendent and is expected to exercise judgment and discretion in making recommendations, implementing policies and procedures and handling a wide variety of matters in the field. The primary purpose of the position is to proactively aid the Superintendent in front-line field management. The FE is responsible for the majority of the layout on a project, supervision of trade workers and subcontractor employees, as well as lift drawings, safety, and quality control responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Perform project layout (surveying) in conformance with design and contract documents.
  • Check concrete forms for accuracy and adequacy of construction, including all embedded items, before placement of concrete.
  • Perform production trend analysis for quantities of work in place and report for the weekly and monthly schedule and cost control reports.
  • Assist with quality control, site safety initiatives and coordination of trade partners as delegated by the project superintendent, potentially directing a small work force.
  • Coordinate material deliveries by checking material requirements in advance, comparing with delivery status, and inspecting delivered materials for quantity, quality and condition.
  • Assist foremen and trade partners with interpretation of plans and specifications.
  • Oversee trade partners and direct workforces of employees or trade partner employees to gain supervisory experience.
  • Participate in jobsite safety meetings and weekly safety audits.
  • Collaborate with the VDC team on VDC scope of work, execution plan and deliverables related to field operations, including reviewing and navigating within the current 3D model viewing and scheduling software.

Requirements

  • Must be a student at the University of Minnesota.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel-based templates, ProjectSight, Primavera and AutoDesk Suite.

Qualifications

  • 4-year degree in Civil, Structural, Architecture, Construction Management, or related field
  • 1 year of experience and/or a combination of education and experience.

Nice to Have

  • Past internships in the construction industry.
