Provide technical expertise in Nuclear Criticality Safety (NCS) to ensure the safe processing, storage, transfer, and handling of fissile materials, protecting personnel and property from criticality accidents. Perform criticality safety analysis, conduct surveillance and audits, and offer professional interpretations and training to operating areas, contributing to national and global security.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical capabilities in Nuclear Criticality Safety (NCS)
- Ensure fissile materials are processed, stored, transferred, and handled safely
- Perform Criticality Safety Analysis of equipment, processes, and procedures
- Prescribe correct methods, control requirements, and limitations
- Perform or participate in surveillance, inspections, walkthroughs, appraisals, or audits of fissile material operations
- Ensure compliance with Nuclear Criticality Safety Approvals and Nuclear Safety rules
- Provide operating areas with specific NCS professional interpretations and advice
- Provide training to employees in basic criticality safety
- Validate, maintain, and operate nuclear computer codes and nuclear cross-sections
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering/Physical Science (Chemistry, Physics, or related) from an EAC ABET accredited program in the US or designated equivalents from Canada or Mexico, the Washington Accord, or ABET substantially equivalent list AND 2 years of relevant experience; OR MS in Engineering/Physical science (with no experience); OR PhD in Engineering/Physical science (with no experience).
- Meet requirements of DOE O 426.2A (Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major, 2 years job-related, and 1-year nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative).
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering/Physical Science (Chemistry, Physics, or related) from an EAC ABET accredited program, or designated equivalents; OR MS in Engineering/Physical science; OR PhD in Engineering/Physical science
- 2 years of relevant experience for Bachelor's degree holders; no experience required for MS or PhD holders. Must also meet DOE O 426.2A requirements (e.g., 2 years job-related and 1-year nuclear experience for baccalaureate in engineering/related scientific major).
Nice to Have
- Five years relevant professional experience
- Prior qualification as a peer-reviewer of NCS documents
- Experience in both MCNP and/or KENO
- Master's degree OR PhD in Nuclear Engineering
