About This Role

The Director & Counsel will provide legal support for advertising, marketing, media, sponsorship, and entertainment activities at American Express. This role involves drafting and negotiating complex contracts, reviewing advertising materials for compliance, and offering actionable legal advice to business partners.

Responsibilities

  • Inform the strategy for and draft, review, and negotiate complex contracts in areas of sponsorships, entertainment, media buying, and service providers.
  • Review advertising and marketing materials for advertising law compliance.
  • Provide actionable legal advice on business activities and initiatives, identifying creative solutions to challenges.
  • Accurately identify and classify legal and business risks, supporting colleagues in mitigation and management.
  • Effectively communicate complex legal concepts and associated risks of business strategies.
  • Drive consistent legal frameworks, thought leadership, and develop best practices and guidelines.
  • Proactively identify opportunities and solutions to drive efficiency and efficacy in legal advice and transactional support.
  • Develop strong relationships of trust and reliance with business and legal colleagues, as well as external partners.
  • Manage competing priorities and aggressive timelines and deadlines.
  • Provide legal support for ad-hoc projects supporting American Express’s business and legal objectives and strategy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and Juris Doctor
  • Admission, in good standing, to practice law in the State of New York
  • 5+ years of relevant legal experience

Qualifications

  • Both a Bachelor’s degree and Juris Doctor
  • 5+ years of relevant legal experience (8+ years preferred)

Nice to Have

  • Experience working for other banks or financial institutions or in other highly regulated industries.
  • Proven ability to act as a trusted advisor.
  • Strong transactional experience in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts.
  • Knowledge of advertising laws, regulations, and NAD decisions, including UDAP/UDAAP and applicable FTC Guides.
  • Honed analytical and problem-solving skills.
