About This Role

The Detention Officer is responsible for ensuring the safety, security, and well-being of detainees in custody, acting with ethical standards and fairness. This role involves supervising and controlling detainee behavior, performing searches, escorting individuals, and enforcing facility rules.

Responsibilities

  • Perform duties related to the detention, processing, safeguarding, security, and escort of detainees as required by the contract
  • Supervise and control detainee behavior, or restrain by force if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints
  • Exercise appropriate judgment in handling of special needs situations or detainees
  • Communicate effectively with staff or detainees using approved facility communication devices like telephone system, intercom system, and portable radios
  • Perform searches of detainees, vehicles, mail items, objects, buildings, and indoor/outdoor areas
  • Escort detainees (hostile, aggressive, passive) using handcuffs and other approved restraints
  • Transport detainees securely using ICE approved restraints and vehicles to off-site locations
  • Attend to housing, feeding, and the physical well-being of detainees on various shifts
  • Enforce rules and regulations of the detention facility, providing care, custody, and control of detainees at all times
  • Guard detainees at deportation or exclusion hearings and remove them from holding areas using proper restraints and security measures

Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must be a US citizen or lawfully admitted for permanent residence and resided in the U.S. for the last five years
  • Ability to pass a criminal background and consumer credit check (no criminal record)
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DHS/ICE government clearance
  • Ability to pass all pre-employment and random drug tests
  • Ability to pass a medical examination and meet health requirements
  • Must be able to maintain physical fitness standards and pass required physical testing requirements (lift up to 50lbs frequently, push wheelchair-bound individual up to 300 lbs, bend, stoop, crawl, kneel, climb stairs/ladders/slopes, stand/walk for minimum 4 hours)
  • Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English
  • Must be willing to work shift hours including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays
  • Ability to pass defensive tactics training
  • Capability of following and interpreting/understanding written and verbal orders, policies and regulations

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)

  • Bilingual
  • Associate or Bachelor level degree in Criminal Justice or related field
