This role involves performing inmate intake, detention care, release, and limited transportation duties for Franklin County, NC. The position requires observation and accompaniment of inmates, ensuring proper care, and maintaining accurate records, often interacting with a diverse inmate population.
Responsibilities
- Receive inmates and conduct searches for contraband
- Complete required intake forms and secure personal property
- Maintain inmate information, verify forms, assign cell locations, and determine classification
- Oversee inmate security and activities, including meals and facility cleaning
- Monitor inmates’ medical status and take action when they are ill or injured
- Provide non-confidential inmate information to the public, attorneys, and bond personnel
- Release inmates on bond due to court order or time served, ensuring proper documentation
- Supervise cleaning and maintenance of center facilities and fixtures
- Conduct perimeter checks and monitor surveillance devices for inmate activity
- Prepare inmates for transport as needed
- Assign tasks to inmate trustees and search them prior to re-entering dorm areas
- Enforce rules of conduct, security, and labor standards, reporting violations to supervisors
- Check on sanitary conditions, fire, and safety hazards
- Answer questions from inmates, staff, and the general public
Requirements
- High school diploma
- Minimal experience in law enforcement or corrections (or equivalent)
- Ability to enforce institutional rules firmly and fairly
- Ability to detect potential behavior problems of inmates
- Ability to detect early symptoms of common health problems
- Ability to carry out oral and written directions accurately
- Ability to supervise the activities of large groups of inmates
- Ability to prepare records and reports
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates
- Possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license upon hire
- Complete Taser training within one year of employment
- Complete Pepper Spray training within one year of employment
- Complete Firearm training within one year of employment
- Complete ASP Baton training within one year of employment
- Obtain CPR certification within one year of employment
- Obtain Detention Officer certification within one year of employment
Qualifications
- High school diploma and minimal experience working in law enforcement or corrections, or equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Minimal experience working in law enforcement or corrections, or equivalent.
