The Counselor for Disabled Students Programs & Services (DSPS) at Madera Community College provides comprehensive counseling, accommodation, and support services to students with disabilities. This role involves determining eligibility for support programs, offering personal, vocational, and academic counseling, and helping students transition and succeed in the college environment.
Responsibilities
- Determine qualifications and appropriate individual support programs for students with disabilities
- Provide direct personal, vocational, and academic counseling services
- Meet with faculty and other academic staff to support individual educational programs of students
- Provide liaison services between students with disabilities, faculty, staff, and campus/community support systems
- Facilitate accommodations by making service referrals to students with various disabilities
- Determine and document educational limitations and appropriate accommodations for students in the DSP&S program
- Assist students to clarify and identify educational goals, develop student educational plans, and select appropriate courses
- Conduct student follow-up, monitor student progress and academic standing, and monitor accommodations and student needs
- Assist students with disabilities to transition to and be successful in the college environment
- Maximize student success by collaborating with other student services and instructional faculty
Requirements
- Evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of diverse student backgrounds and equity-minded practices
- Master's in rehabilitation counseling OR equivalent
- Fifteen or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work specifically related to people with disabilities, OR six semester units of graduate-level counseling practicum/field work in a post-secondary DSPS Program or program for people with disabilities, OR two years of full-time experience counseling for students with disabilities
Qualifications
- Master's in rehabilitation counseling; or Master's in counseling, guidance counseling, student personnel, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, marriage, family and child counseling or a bachelor's degree in marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling and possession of a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)
Nice to Have
- Experience and skill incorporating diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility
- Recent experience working with racially minoritized students in higher education
- Experience working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds including students with disabilities
- Willingness to examine and remediate instructional, relational, and classroom practices to support racially minoritized students
- Related work and professional experience
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff
- Demonstrated ability to work with computers and other technologies
- Experience counseling students in college-level students with disabilities programs
- Knowledge of the ADA and Section 504 and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act
- Experience with learning disabilities assessments
- Demonstrated ability to motivate, counsel, and teach traditionally underrepresented students
- Knowledge of college and/or community programs that assist students with disabilities
- Knowledge of computer assistive technology
- Strong commitment to professional growth and development
- Demonstrated ability to plan and implement various counseling related projects and special events
- Demonstrated ability to work and plan independently
- Related work and professional experience including grant writing and adaptive technology
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills with students, staff and faculty
- Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals
