About This Role

Serve the community by ensuring the safety of individuals inside and outside the Walworth County jail, maintaining security, and supervising inmate activities. This role requires strong communication, problem-solving, and resilience in a dynamic environment.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce rules and regulations inside the jail to maintain security and prevent disturbances, assaults, and escapes
  • Settle disputes between inmates and enforce regulations using progressive sanctions
  • Supervise the daily activities of inmates, including meal distribution, medication distribution, laundry exchange, and work assignments
  • Ensure the whereabouts of all inmates at all times
  • Search inmates and their living quarters for contraband items like weapons and drugs
  • Screen visitors and incoming mail to prevent contraband from entering the jail
  • Regularly inspect facilities for unsanitary conditions, contraband, security breaches, and rule violations
  • Report inmate conduct violations, assist in investigations if a crime is committed or an inmate escapes
  • Write reports and fill out daily logs detailing inmate behavior and other notable occurrences during shifts

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (or obtained by hire date)
  • Basic math skills
  • Reading and writing skills
  • Ability to type and complete basic computer tasks

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Prior experience in public safety or customer service is helpful, but not a necessity
