This position enforces city ordinances to ensure safe and healthy living environments for residents by inspecting properties, investigating complaints, and ensuring compliance with housing and environmental codes.
Responsibilities
- Inspect residential, commercial, and other properties for compliance with city, state, and federal housing, property maintenance, and environmental codes
- Investigate public health complaints and meet with community leaders to discuss code enforcement concerns
- Schedule and inspect single and multi-family housing for compliance with property maintenance codes
- Schedule and inspect vacant lots and city right of way for code compliance
- Investigate property maintenance violations on occupied and unoccupied properties
- Inspect existing structures for compliance with life safety, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing codes
- Inspect fire-damaged buildings and buildings for hazardous materials like lead-based paint and asbestos
- Investigate and record noise pollution
- Prepare inspection reports, determine corrective steps, and initiate emergency vacate orders as appropriate
- Explain, interpret, and provide guidance regarding applicable codes to property owners, residents, and contractors
- Follow up on cases to verify corrections, issue uniform ordinance summonses, and prepare cases for prosecution
- Testify in court as necessary
- Maintain logs and records related to inspection and enforcement activities
- Maintain assigned vehicles and equipment
- Receive and respond to inquiries, concerns, and complaints
- Perform general clerical work including reports, correspondence, data entry, and answering phones
- Provide training to other inspectors as assigned
- Attend training, conferences, and meetings to enhance job knowledge and maintain certifications
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED
- Four (4) years of relevant prior experience
- Valid South Carolina Class “D” Driver’s License
- Skill in the use of Microsoft Office
- Ability to effectively deal with irate citizens
