Enforce City codes and ordinances related to land development, housing, environmental protection, and various property violations. Investigate complaints, notify violators, and ensure compliance, presenting cases to the Code Enforcement Board when necessary.
Responsibilities
- Investigate reported and observed violations of City ordinances and codes pertaining to zoning, housing, environment, junk vehicles, derelict properties and trailer/recreational vehicle parking, or environmental protection and solid waste.
- Notify code violators of code requirements and obtain compliance through negotiation.
- Issue citations and re-inspect premises after allotted time to verify correction of violations.
- Refer non-compliance cases to the Code Enforcement Board for action and present testimony.
- Interpret and explain assigned ordinances and codes to the general public, property owners, businesses, builders, contractors, and other interested parties.
- Prepare and maintain necessary reports and records.
- Collaborate with other City Departments to resolve complaints and concerns.
- Make presentations to and answer questions from various neighborhood and homeowner associations and civic organizations.
- Provide information regarding Code Enforcement to supervisors, coworkers, other employees, and the public.
- Remove illegally placed signs from public rights-of-way (Sign Enforcement).
- Patrol the City by vehicle or on foot, looking for City Code of Ordinance violations.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED
- 3+ years experience in code enforcement or related fields
- Valid driver’s license
- Valid telephone number
- Certification in Fundamentals of Code Enforcement (F.A.C.E.) within 12 months of employment
- Thorough knowledge of municipal codes and ordinances
- Knowledge of investigative procedures
- Ability to use common computer hardware and software (PCs, laptops, printers, scanners, Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Photo Editor)
- Skill in using digital cameras and digital files
Qualifications
- A high school diploma from an accredited school or a GED.
- 3 years of responsible experience in code enforcement, code compliance, building inspection, housing inspection, property inspections, property appraisals, environmental inspection, planning or zoning, building construction or contracting, law enforcement, fire inspector, or public safety.
