Clinical Microbiologist

About This Role

Supervise and lead the technical activities of the Microbiology Unit, including Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology, Mycology, Parasitology, Immunology, and Media Preparation sections, while ensuring quality control and training junior staff.

Responsibilities

• Plan, organize, and supervise the technical activities of the Microbiology Unit
• Lead complex and critical analyses and evaluation of results
• Instruct other technologists and laboratory trainees in proper microbiological procedures and techniques
• Maintain quality control in the unit, checking operating efficiency of equipment and instruments
• Supervise and participate in preparation and maintenance of related laboratory records and reports
• Evaluate current methods and procedures for adequacy, accuracy, clinical significance, and cost
• Develop procedures, norms, and standards for new tests
• Keep current with new developments in the field by reviewing literature and attending seminars
• Maintain supply and equipment control in the Microbiology Unit, ordering supplies and maintaining inventories
• Consult with pathologists and other medical staff members on problems related to the Unit
• Consult with Laboratory Director on all new procedures
• Represent Laboratory at meetings and conferences, serving on the San Joaquin General Hospital Infection Control Committee
• Collect specimens from patients for tests and examinations
• Assist in the administration of the Clinical Laboratory on a rotating basis in the absence of the Administrative Clinical Laboratory Technologist

Requirements

• 2 years of experience as a Clinical Microbiologist
• Valid California State license as a Clinical Microbiologist, Clinical Laboratory Technologist, or Clinical Laboratory Scientist limited to Clinical Microbiology
• Knowledge of principles, methods, materials, techniques, and terminology of microbiology and immunology as related to medical technology
• Knowledge of principles and methods of supervision and training

• Two years equivalent to Clinical Microbiologist
