About This Role

Administer daily security and public safety operations for a college campus, implementing and enforcing established policies and procedures. This role involves directing and overseeing assigned staff, responding to emergencies, and coordinating with law enforcement and various college departments.

Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day operations, directing and prioritizing work activities of assigned personnel, including contract guards.
  • Review post assignments, oversee personnel deployment, and review daily incident reports.
  • Conduct incident investigations and prepare written reports.
  • Supervise special events, coordinating with the New York Fire and Police Departments.
  • Prepare security, safety, crowd control, and emergency evacuation plans in consultation with appropriate college staff.
  • Participate in planning for major campus activities, identifying security and safety issues for projects like building renovation.
  • Oversee the conduct of roll calls and inspections, and supervise Training Officers.
  • Review and provide input for daily roll call training matters; may prepare and conduct staff training.
  • Supervise and monitor time and leave usage, verify attendance, and document attendance violations.
  • Prepare performance evaluations and initiate disciplinary action when necessary.
  • Oversee semi-annual uniform and equipment inspection and prepare applicable reports.
  • Research and gather information on new equipment, uniforms, and vehicles, preparing purchase requests.
  • Conduct peace officer background investigations and prepare reports (when assigned to Central Office).
  • Assist in the analysis, review, and utilization of confidential records, including from NYPD (when assigned to Central Office).
  • Participate in staffing and selection activities, including hiring pools and examination administration.
  • Act in the absence of the College or University Security Director when delegated.

Requirements

  • Baccalaureate degree in Criminal Justice, Police Science or a closely related field and three years of related experience, two years of which must involve responsible administrative or supervisory experience OR Baccalaureate degree and four years of related experience, two years of which must involve responsible administrative or supervisory experience OR Associate's degree or 60 credits and five years of related experience, two years of which must involve responsible administrative or supervisory experience OR High school diploma or G.E.D., three years experience as a Campus Public Safety Sergeant and four additional years of related experience.
  • Valid, current New York State driver's license
  • New York State residency
  • United States citizenship
  • Ability to qualify for and obtain Peace Officer status within one year of appointment.
  • Ability to receive New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services certified firearms training within one year of appointment (at College President's discretion).

Qualifications

  • Baccalaureate degree in Criminal Justice, Police Science or a closely related field or equivalent
  • Three years of related experience, two years of which must involve responsible administrative or supervisory experience, with progressively responsible security experience in a College or University setting, or equivalent military/law enforcement/security force/business/industrial experience.
