About This Role

Serve as a health care interpreter for patients and staff, facilitating communication between monolingual speakers in compliance with all policies and standards. This role involves conveying health care information, documenting patient encounters, and contributing to departmental projects.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate delivery of language services to Limited English proficient (LEP) patients and English-speaking providers
  • Provide sight and written translation of UMHS documents for patients as needed
  • Document patient encounter according to department standards
  • Adhere to all relevant UMHS and Interpreter Services policies in health care interpreting
  • Communicate Interpreter Services resources and protocols to hospital staff and patients
  • Adhere to the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC) National Standards and Code of Ethics
  • Collaborate, support, and educate one another to enhance skill level and effectiveness
  • Actively contribute to departmental projects and participate in team initiatives

Requirements

  • Must pass a 3rd party Language and Interpreting Assessment
  • Fluent in Arabic and English in reading, writing, and speaking
  • Knowledge of different Arabic Dialects
  • Reliable transportation to travel to all Michigan Medicine locations

Nice to Have

  • An associate's degree in a healthcare field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Solid knowledge of medical terminology in both English and target languages
  • National Certification from CCHI or NBCMI
