About This Role

This role involves providing daily care for laboratory animals, primarily rodents, at Michigan Medicine. The technician monitors animal health, follows Standard Operating Procedures, and supports research activities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide for the daily care and handling of laboratory animals, mainly rodents
  • Identify clinical and behavioral signs of illness in animals and report accordingly
  • Understand and follow all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Quality Assurance Standards
  • Communicate and work effectively and professionally with internal and external customers
  • Provide training support to peers
  • Perform tasks requiring considerable use of arms and legs, including climbing, lifting up to 50 pounds, balancing, walking, and stooping
  • Push and pull equipment weighing up to 1,000 pounds
  • Work at levels from 8 inches to 6-7 feet above the floor
  • Perform repetitive motions over extended periods of time

Requirements

  • High School diploma
  • Up to 1 year of paid animal experience, or equivalent
  • Ability to function independently and positively in a team setting

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent combination of certification, education or experience
  • Up to 1 year of paid animal experience

Nice to Have

  • Associate or Bachelor's degree
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in animal care and laboratory activities
  • Knowledge of animal research
  • Knowledge of principles of medical asepsis
  • Experience working with rodents or providing daily care to rodents
  • Paid, hands-on animal experience at a farm, pet shop, zoo, animal rehabilitation center, or through animal-related course work
