About This Role

Provide daily care and handling for laboratory animals, primarily rodents, by identifying clinical signs of illness and following standard operating procedures. This role is crucial for supporting research and technology development within Michigan Medicine.

Responsibilities

  • Provide for the daily care and handling of laboratory animals, mainly rodents
  • Identify clinical and behavioral signs of illness in animals and report accordingly
  • Understand and follow all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Quality Assurance Standards
  • Communicate and work effectively and professionally with internal and external customers
  • Provide training support to peers

Requirements

  • High School diploma
  • Up to 1 year of paid animal experience, or an equivalent combination of certification, education or experience providing animal care
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Ability to push and pull equipment weighing up to 1,000 pounds
  • Ability to work at various heights
  • Ability to perform repetitive motions over extended periods of time
  • Ability to perform in an environment with exposure to animals, animal dander, animal by-products, and bedding materials

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent combination of certification, education or experience
  • Up to 1 year of paid animal experience

Nice to Have

  • Associate or Bachelor's degree
  • Some knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in animal care and laboratory activities
  • Some knowledge of animal research
  • Some knowledge of the principles of medical asepsis
  • Experience working with rodents or providing daily care to rodents
  • Paid, hands-on animal experience at a farm, pet shop, zoo, animal rehabilitation center, or through animal-related course work
