About This Role

This role involves providing daily care for laboratory animals, primarily rodents, at Michigan Medicine. The technician will identify clinical signs of illness, adhere to SOPs, and contribute to a world-class academic health system.

Responsibilities

  • Provide for the daily care and handling of laboratory animals, including rodents
  • Identify clinical and behavioral signs of illness in animals and report accordingly
  • Understand and follow all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Quality Assurance Standards
  • Communicate and work effectively and professionally with internal and external customers
  • Provide training support to peers
  • Lift materials weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Push and pull equipment weighing up to 1,000 pounds
  • Work at various heights from 8 inches to 7 feet above the floor
  • Perform repetitive motions over extended periods of time

Requirements

  • High School diploma
  • Ability to lift materials up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to push and pull equipment up to 1,000 pounds
  • Ability to work at various heights
  • Ability to perform repetitive motions
  • Annual influenza vaccination or proof of exemption

Qualifications

  • High School diploma and up to 1 year of paid animal experience, or an equivalent combination of certification, education or experience providing animal care
  • Up to 1 year of paid animal experience, or an equivalent combination of certification, education or experience providing animal care

Nice to Have

  • Associate or Bachelor's degree
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in animal care and laboratory activities
  • Knowledge of animal research
  • Knowledge of the principles of medical asepsis
  • Experience working with rodents or providing daily care to rodents
  • Paid, hands-on animal experience at a farm, pet shop, zoo, animal rehabilitation center, or through animal-related course work
