About This Role

Provide American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting and transliterating services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in various educational and institutional settings at Ohlone College, ensuring effective communication and accessibility.

Responsibilities

  • Provide interpretation and transliteration services in American Sign Language (ASL), oral interpretation, or other appropriate methods to support Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals in a variety of settings.
  • Facilitate communication between Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals and faculty, staff, and peers in diverse settings such as meetings, instructional sessions, workshops, events, and appointments.
  • Analyze environmental factors for effective communication, including lighting, seating, visual aids, and technological tools; suggest adjustments to enhance accessibility.
  • Interpret lectures, presentations, discussions, and activities, conveying information effectively using ASL and providing voice interpretation as required.
  • Prepare for assignments by reviewing relevant materials, technical vocabulary, and subject content to ensure accurate communication.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with students, staff, and other stakeholders; collaborate with faculty and administrators to address individual needs and enhance accessibility.
  • Stay current with advancements in interpretation practices, technology, and relevant legislation through professional development and ongoing education.
  • Demonstrate cultural competence and sensitivity to individuals' diverse backgrounds, fostering an inclusive and equitable environment.
  • Participate in training, workshops, and other development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Perform related duties as assigned to support accessibility and communication needs.

Requirements

  • Fluency in English and American Sign Language
  • High level of mental concentration
  • Evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students
