Effectively evaluate and manage the care of adult urology inpatients under the authority of a designated supervising physician. Provide problem-oriented interventions for urological conditions across various clinical areas.
Responsibilities
- Update daily patient list
- Write orders for imaging and manage coordination of follow up on other studies ordered
- Round with the resident team in the early morning and perform individual rounds during the day to keep up with active inpatient issues
- Provide patient education on PCNT flushes, neobladder irrigation, foley management, SPT management, ostomy care and catheter care including intermittent self-catheterization
- Prepare patients for timely discharge process
- Evaluate acute postoperative patients
- Discuss inpatient management with consulting services
- Communicate with the urology intern throughout the workday
- Document care according to University of Michigan Health System standards
- Assist in minor procedures as directed by attending physician
Requirements
- Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan (for NP applicants)
- Current specialty certification to practice as an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (for NP applicants)
- Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program (for NP applicants)
- Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) (for NP applicants)
- Current DEA registration
- ACLS required (separate AHA approved BLS also required unless ACLS was completed through the UMHS Simulation Center)
- One (1) year of experience as a PA/NP
- Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan (for PA applicants)
- State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required (for PA applicants)
- Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP (for PA applicants)
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA) (for PA applicants)
Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program OR Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA)
- One (1) year of experience as a PA/NP
Nice to Have
- Experience with surgical patient care
- One (1) year of Urology experience as a PA/NP
- Inpatient urology experience
- Demonstrated experience in evaluation and care of preoperative and postoperative surgical patients
- Experience with giving history and physical examinations, writing patient orders and progress notes, hospital rounds and consultations, call, ordering and interpreting diagnostic studies
- Experience assisting in the operating room, and performing procedures
- Excellent interpersonal and patient service skills
- Ability to work with minimal supervision, and as part of a collaborative team
