About This Role

Coordinate the care of acutely ill post-surgical adult/late adult patients in the Cardiovascular ICU. This role involves advanced diagnostic and therapeutic tasks, detailed patient assessments, and collaboration with medical staff.

Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced diagnostic and therapeutic tasks associated with patients undergoing Cardiac, Vascular, and Thoracic procedures
  • Collect detailed histories and physicals and present pertinent data to the medical staff
  • Collect and interpret reports from diagnostic lab tests, radiographic procedures, and clinical studies
  • Order tests and prescribe medications
  • Perform various diagnostic, therapeutic, and minor procedures, based on privileges
  • Assist attending physician in orientation of new resident physicians to the service and assist in maintaining continuity of care
  • Confer with attending physicians and communicate with other care providers/consultants to coordinate clinical care
  • Maintain accurate documentation regarding patient status, evaluations, and treatment
  • Streamline the patient transfer process between levels of care, including writing discharge orders
  • Participate in quality assurance activities, peer evaluations and support research initiatives

Requirements

  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan (for NP)
  • Current specialty certification as an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care/Primary Care Nurse Practitioner, and/or Family Nurse Practitioner (for NP)
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program (for NP)
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) (for NP)
  • Recent clinical ICU experience (last 5 years) caring for acutely ill patients with diseases common in Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery
  • Current DEA registration
  • ACLS required (AHA approved BLS also required)
  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan (for PA)
  • Satisfactory completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program (for PA)
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA) (for PA)
  • State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required (for PA)

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program OR Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by ARC-PA
  • 2+ years of ICU experience caring for critical care patients with recent clinical ICU experience in the last 5 years caring for acutely ill patients with diseases common in Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery.

Nice to Have

  • At least 1 year full time ICU experience as an NP/PA
  • Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of current medical, surgical, and pharmaceutical treatment modalities of post-cardiothoracic surgery
  • Demonstrated experience with ventricular assist device and heart/lung transplantation patients
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate clinical care across multiple patient care services and advocate for patients
  • Demonstrated high level of critical thinking
  • Ability to prioritize assignments and manage a busy work environment
