About This Role

This Accounting Technician II position supports the Financial Management Division of the City of Norfolk's Department of Public Works by processing billing functions, accounts receivable, and financial reports, as well as providing customer service related to storm water billing.

Responsibilities

  • Process daily, weekly, and monthly billing functions
  • Process accounts receivable including check posting and account reallocations
  • Process billing reports and regularly review accounts to ensure proper billing
  • Assist with special billing projects
  • Provide customer service to citizens inquiring about storm water billing and quotes for fees
  • Review reports and customer inquiries and enter data into computerized utility billing system
  • Prepare journal vouchers and other financial documents such as budget transfers and cash receipts
  • Assist with the budget process
  • Respond to citizen inquiries regarding Storm Water billing and adjust records as needed
  • Perform administrative duties by compiling data for reports, filing documents, processing various reports, maintaining files, and writing correspondence

Requirements

  • Knowledge of procedures for keeping fiscal accounts and records
  • Knowledge of pertinent departmental operational procedures and policies
  • Knowledge of mathematics as it applies to bookkeeping and accounting operations (adding, subtracting and percentages)
  • Ability to write memos and other documentation
  • Computer skills including Windows, mainframe applications, Excel, Outlook, and Word

Qualifications

  • Six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Associate's degree preferred, with an area of concentration in Accounting.
  • Two years experience in bookkeeping or accounting. Six months as a staff accountant preferred.
